Fiberglass filters are one of the most affordable options available. They are made of spun fiberglass and offer low air resistance with a MERV rating of 2-3. These filters are suitable if your home stays relatively clean and you don't need top-level air quality. However, if you have pets or dust problems, or you're concerned about air quality, fiberglass might not be the best choice.
Pleated filters are made from cotton or polyester and offer more surface area for filtration thanks to their pleated design. They have a MERV rating of 6-13, depending on how tightly they are woven. These filters are more effective for air cleaning and are ideal for homes with pets or allergies. Pleated filters cost more but need maintenance every three months.
These filters can be disposable or washable, and they often come pleated. Made from materials like polypropylene, cotton, or polyester, they use charged particles to capture dust. If you choose washable filters, they need to be taken apart and cleaned regularly. However, avoid using high-pressure washers as this can damage them. Keep in mind that these thicker filters may reduce airflow, putting strain on your HVAC unit.
Carbon filters use charcoal or carbon to absorb gases, making them effective at trapping pollutants like cigarette smoke or vehicle fumes. However, these filters may not be as effective for dust or pet dander. One downside is that it's often hard to tell when they need replacement.
Furnace filters come in many standard sizes, such as 10 x 20 x 1" and 20 x 25 x 4". Most homes will use a filter size like 10 x 20 x 1", but using the wrong size can harm your HVAC system by reducing air quality or overloading the unit.
