What is a Pulse Valve and How Does It Work?

A pulse valve is a key component in a pulse jet baghouse dust collection system, designed to release compressed air in short, powerful bursts to clean the filter bags. Unlike standard two-way solenoid valves, right angle pulse valves have a 90-degree connection between the inlet and outlet, allowing them to deliver air in sharp impacts, also known as pulses. This mechanism ensures the system cleans effectively by sending a quick burst of air, which cleans dust from the filter bags. Even if continuously powered, the pulse valve only releases air in short intervals.

How a Pulse Valve Works

The pulse valve stays sealed until energized by a solenoid, releasing compressed air through a blowpipe. This process is vital for maintaining efficient dust removal. When the solenoid is activated, it depressurizes the back of the valve, allowing the air to flow through in a quick burst, which cleans the dust from the filter bags.


Since pulse solenoid valves are diaphragm valves, they cannot perform the switching function like other diaphragm solenoid valves (even if the coil is energized) without the necessary pressure difference. The pressure applied to the solenoid valve inlet should be a minimum of 0.5 kg/cm2.


Pulse valves are typically controlled by a timer or differential pressure relay, which ensures that the valve opens and closes at the right intervals for effective dust removal. The valves can either be integrated into the system or controlled remotely through a solenoid box.


Pulse solenoid valves are widely used in industries such as cement, ceramics, power plants, steel, and glass manufacturing. They help remove dust from bag filters and prevent dust in silos from solidifying.
